Onto beschreibt eine (abrupte, auch springende) Bewegung von jemand oder etwas auf eine Oberfläche.

     Der Ball springt auf den Tisch.
  = The ball jumps onto the table.

Beispiele
The cat jumped onto the roof.
Die Katze sprang aufs Dach hinauf.
 
He jumped onto the train.
Er sprang auf den Zug auf.
 
The mice hopped onto the table.
 Die Mäuse hüpften auf den Tisch (rauf).
